Translated by Sarah Connor with an introduction by Odhran O'Brien
Edited by Eugenia Schettino and Peter Hocking
This collection of Bishop Griver's letters from 1853 - 1864 is the result of a collaboration between the Archives of New Norcia and of the Catholic Archdiocese of Perth. Whilst all the letters in this collection are from the New Norcia Archives, the idea for the project came about as a result of a meeting between the New Norcia's archivist and Odhran O'Brien, the director of Archives and Information Governance at the Archdiocese. Odhran has a deep knowledge of Bishop Griver, being the author of the seminal work Martin Griver - Unearthed: The Life of a Spanish Missionary Priest Who Became a Bishop in Colonial Western Australia, 1814 - 1886.
Sarah Connor was engaged to translate the letters and was ably assisted by Eugenia Schettino who is herself a native Spanish speaker and translator.
The vast majority of the letters are in Spanish but there was a number in English in later years as Bishop Griver became more comfortable with the language, and these have been transcribed by Sarah exactly as Griver wrote them. Those that were originally written in English are identified as such in the text.
